Mr. Lounsbury is the High Definition Survey (HDS) Manager in CHA’s Technology & Geospatial Services Group. He has over 21 years of experience in all types of survey applications, including over five years of experience with a variety of laser scanning applications. Jody has worked with HDS since the technology first hit the market and helped to develop new ways to integrate HDS with conventional survey techniques. He has performed and managed Survey and HDS of all sizes for many Federal, State and Local Agencies as well as private entities. He has also written extensively on HDS and its applications, and been a guest speaker at state and international conferences on the topic.
Program Description:
High Definition Laser Scanning (HDS) is a relatively new technology, first introduced in 1999 as a mechanical engineering tool. Over the last few years it has evolved into a civil/architectural tool that has many uses. The current hardware and software allows surveyors to accurately and efficiently collect highly detailed as-built information on existing structures and the surrounding site. The data collected through the HDS process can be utilized during the entire project lifecycle for the creation of planimetric base mapping, historic recordation/documentation, elevation drawings, electrical/mechanical as-builts and serves as the foundation for BIM models. HDS can be combined with conventional survey data, manual measurements and any other record data collected for a project. The 3D database or “point cloud” collected captures the entire site and allows data to be extracted and measured throughout the entire project form the designers desk top, eliminating return site visits.
